What is Intermittent hypoxia-hyperoxia treatment (IHHT)

Intermittent hypoxia-hyperoxia treatment (IHHT) is a novel, safe and effective technique shown to boost energy and reduce susceptibility to illness.

The technique involves breathing through a mask for approximately 40 minutes whilst the amount of oxygen you breathe is increased and decreased at regular intervals. By doing this, IHHT recreates the effects of altitude training, providing the amazing health benefits without the excessive work.

How does it work?

IHHT works by effecting the way our body utilises energy.

The human body consists of trillions of cells which all contain mitochondria, the power stations of the body. These mitochondria produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the chemical basis for all reactions and metabolic processes.

Mitochondria are very sensitive to oxygen radicals, by-products of ageing, stress, lack of sleep, alcohol consumption and many other daily factors. These oxygen radicals damage the mitochondria, which become weaker and weaker over time. The damaged mitochondria multiply rapidly and cells with damaged mitochondria eventually die. Research highlights the association between cells damaged in this way and functional disorders and chronic diseases.

IHHT works by eliminating these damaged mitochondria, increasing the production of new, healthy mitochondria which produce ATP more effectively.

IHHT also increases the production of red blood cells and new blood vessels (capillaries), increase the capacity for oxygen uptake and transport through tissue and cells. This means that oxygen is utilised much more effectively.

IHHT has indirect and direct beneficial effects in the context of exposition to the new COVID-19 virus. Besides the direct improvement to respiratory function, indirect metabolic and epigenetic effects may render the human body more resistant and resilient when exposed to a new aggressive virus. Additional protective effects of IHHT are the enhanced expression of CD8 lymphocytes and natural killer cells because recent studies have shown that severe Covid-19 infections show a lack of CD8 lymphocytes (Lancet 2020).
